Layering And Stacking Jewelry

One of the most popular ways to accessorize is through layering and stacking your jewelry. Whether it’s adding a second necklace into the mix or stacking bracelets onto one another, layering and stacking jewelry brings out an individual sense of style in us all. Learn more on what to pair and how to create the perfect layered jewelry look.

What is Stacking and Layering Jewelry?

Stacking and layering jewelry is a popular trend that allows individuals to get creative and tell their own story through their jewelry collection. It’s one of the easiest ways to express yourself and to show off your unique sense of style.

Layered Jewelry Trends
Many forms of jewelry bring options to stack or layer, but the most popular forms of stacking jewelry are:

Rings: Many wedding rings are designed to be stacked in the present day. It’s common to see an engagement ring fit into the wedding band. Additionally, layering rings across your fingers or stacking rings of different sizes adds a distinctive statement to any look.

Bracelets: Stacking bracelets has been a trend for quite some time. Layering different materials, styles, and colors can dress up or down your appearance depending on the look you’re going for.

Necklaces: Necklaces are some of the most common pieces of jewelry to layer. This method shows off the different lengths of your accessories. It’s recommended to start with 2 or 3 chain lengths, all at least 2” in difference.

History of Stacking Jewelry

Stackable jewelry trends, first seen in the 16th and 17th centuries, centered mainly around rings. Stackable wedding bands interconnected with two or three hoops pieced together to form one complete ring. These interlocking rings became designed to come apart.

During the engagement, the bride and groom-to-be wore only one of the rings. At the time of ceremony, the groom would transfer his ring to his loved one’s finger, interlocking it back into its original state. This symbolized becoming “locked” in love.

How to Stack Jewelry

You want to start off by choosing your element. It’s important to find accessories that complement one another rather than clash with each other. When finding jewelry to pair, it’s best to stick to one metal. For example, if you’re wearing a gold ring it wouldn’t be practical to stack a silver ring on top of it.

Try to stick with the same metals when stacking jewelry such as rings and bracelets. If you wanted to add a nice contrast such as a colored jewel or pendant, that would allow the accessories to bring out more color and dimension without completely throwing off the look.

Take a Look at Your Elements
When picking out jewelry to wear, try to find items that share common elements. For example, a long, simple pearl necklace and dangly earrings would work beautifully with vintage, silver rings and a diamond bracelet. Placement, thickness, and length of your jewelry go hand-in-hand when it comes to creating the perfect compliment to your look.

Use Your Best Judgement When Layering
When stacking necklaces, layer by size (length) and thickness (in millimeters). It’s important to double check that the pieces you pick make sense and look aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Try to make sure that your accessories are appropriate with what you’re wearing. If you’re gearing up for a special evening, consider the blank space in between your outfit. You can work bare spaces like your neck or wrists with layered jewelry to tie everything together.

Placement of Jewelry
While it’s good practice to find items that are complementary to one another, it’s also important to study the placement of each accessory. The easiest way to layer jewelry is by stacking pieces together that vary by length or size.

How Much is Too Much Layering?

If it doesn’t look right, leave it out: There will be plenty of other situations you can wear that skull choker. If it doesn’t make sense with what you’re wearing or the other accessories you have on, don’t wear it.
Try to stay consistent with your metals: You don’t want to throw off your look by adding different elements. It’s important to keep a harmonious course when picking out your items.

Doesn’t fit? leave it: Make sure stackable jewelry like your midi rings fit well, as you don’t want to lose your precious jewelry! If the jewelry falls off or is too tight, it’s not meant to be worn.
