Golden South Sea Pearl

Golden South Sea Pearls are formed within the largest oyster, known as the Pinctada Maxima. The Golden South Sea Pearl comes from the gold-lipped variety of the Pinctada Maxima. Pearl sourced from these oysters are much larger than other saltwater pearls. For example, south sea pearls average in size from 10 to 13 mm.

The Golden South Sea Pearl is highly desired by many. It’s large size, soft golden hue, and satiny finish make a statement in jewelry designs around the world. This variety of pearl varies in color from a classic white to a vibrant gold. The more vibrant the golden hue, the more valuable the worth of the pearl. Therefore, the deeper the shade of gold, the more desirable it will be.

Where are Golden South Sea Pearls Cultivated?
Originally the Golden South Sea pearls were sourced out of Australia. Now, the bulk of Pinctada Maxima pearl cultivation is conducted in the Philippines and Indonesia. The majority of the pears cultivated are sold at auction and provide a great economical benefit to the Philippines and Indonesia. In addition, it is a sustainable and eco-friendly business as the oysters do not have to die to be cultivated again and again.

What is Special About the Golden South Sea Pearl?

There are many factors which make the Golden South Sea Pearl more valuable than conventional pearls. Below, we will go through the reasons behind the value of this large and rare pearl.

Rarity

The South Sea Pearl is extremely rare, making the Golden South Sea Pearl even more so. Only 10-30% of these pearls are suitable for use in jewelry.

Color

Golden South Sea Pearls come in many shades usually ranging from a light cream color to a deep golden hue. The Golden South Sea Pearl is said to have a silky appearance superior to that of a conventional pearl.

Time

These varieties of pearls take between two and four years to reach their final form. In comparison, Tahitian pearls usually develop within one year.

Size

South Sea Pearls are the largest variety of pears on the market. The average size of the Golden South Sea Pearls is 10 to 13 mm. However, some pearls as large as 20 mm have been cultivated from the Pinctada Maxima.

Golden South Sea Pearls are the most coveted pearls in the world. A single string of these rare pearls can be valued as high as $100,000 and above.

The Science Behind the Pearl

There’s a lot happening behind the scenes when it comes to the formation of these South Sea Pearls. Nacre is the material that pearls are made of. It’s iridescence and beauty has been prized for thousands of years. For instance, the world’s oldest pearl is 8,000 years old and still appears the same as when it first came from it’s oyster. The durability of nacre will stand the test of time and can be passed down from generation to generation.

The Golden South Sea Pearl is cultivated within the oyster known as the Pinctada Maxima. First, a nucleus is placed within the Pinctada Maxima. This nucleus prompts the creation of a pearl sac. The pearl sac is what tells the Pinctada Maxima to create the nacre. Finally, over two to three years, they will remove the South Sea Pearl from the oyster. This long and arduous process contributes to the expensive price tag on this rare and radiant pearl.

Why Choose This Special Pearl?

The Golden South Sea Pearl would make an exceptional addition to any jewelry collection. The durability alone is a good reason to obtain one of these pearls. Jewelry containing pearls can be passed down through the generations. The luster and size of the Golden South Sea Pearl is incomparable to any other pearl on the market coming in at 10 to 13 mm. In conclusion, while the initial cost may be high, the beauty, size, rarity, and durability are reasons enough to add this pearl to your collection.
